August

Intro

With august came the chance for us to get away for a nice long two-week break in the caravan, and the chance to really enjoy the unit.

This is where you can derive some real value from the van. It’s peak season, so booking a two-week holiday at Thorness Bay would be expensive. But not for us; as owners we have no holiday accommodation costs at all.

Many owners we spoke to on the site take lengthy summer holidays, sometimes for the full duration of the time their kids and grandkids are off school.

Visits

The first week of august is Cowes Week, the town’s annual yachting regatta and one of the biggest event of its type anywhere in the world.

Cowes is less than ten minutes away from Thorness by car, and the town really comes alive during Cowes Week as competitors from all over the world flock to the island’s northern coast.

We would recommend a drink on the marina as it is a perfect vantage point for the events of Cowes week and is free. We also watched the Extreme 40 Catamarans race very close to Egypt Point, between Gurnard and Cowes and only a few miles from our holiday home.

If you do find yourself in Cowes during Cowes Week, be sure to check out the amazing display by the Red Arrows on the Friday night, followed up with an excellent firework display.

As everyone on the site was talking about Black Gang Chine, we decided it was time to check it out! We had an excellent time at this pirate themed adventure park, set on the cliffs above Niton near the southern tip of the Isle of Wight.

Championed by many as a “quintessentially British” alternative to more mainstream parks, Black Gang Chine did not disappoint. It has bags of charm and some great water rides, making it well worth the entry fee, particularly if you stay all day.

We would recommend Black Gang Chine to those with young children especially.

Ownership

We took advantage of the opportunity to add some improvements to the interior of our caravan. These included;

Photo frames with holiday photos in the lounge.

New curtains and bedside lamps in the bedrooms.

Plastic glasses and a washing up bowl in the kitchen.

New mats in the bathroom.

The bright and pleasant evenings that we experienced this august made us think more about a veranda. The alfresco dining – maybe with a vodka and tonic in hand – that such a veranda would provide would more than make up for the capital outlay.

We will certainly consider this at a later stage.

August also saw the first Sunday roast cooked from scratch in our caravan. We’re pleased to report that this went off without a hitch!

The site felt much busier, especically in the pool and shop areas. Being able to escape to the owners’ area gave us welcome sanctuary from the noise.
