Lodges vs Caravans

Over the past 10 years we have seen a major growth in the number of parks in the UK offering lodges in addition to their standard static caravans for sale. Although some lodge only parks now exist they are generally offered as the premium choice for customers alongside standard caravans.

This development has been fed consumer demand for more luxurious holiday accommodation and increased spending power in the UK. The most significant growth in holiday lodges has occurred in areas that already demand high prices for standard static caravans such as the Lake District, where prices often lead in at over £100,000.

Many of the main holiday park chains such as Haven and Park Resorts have introduced luxury lodges on their premium location parks across the UK.

Holiday park lodges generally have wood or wood style cladding rather than a bespoke wooden construction that would be used to create a permanent home. Many lodges tend to be made up of 2 x standard caravan units, effectively making a double size holiday home. In contrast to a static caravan, which sits on a concrete base, lodges are generally sited directly on an integral brick or concrete base. The majority of lodges come with a balcony or veranda attached to the increase usable space.

The cladding around the lodge gives a more appealing look to the holiday home in comparison to the bare aluminum of a static caravan. For ease of maintenance most lodges use wood finish PVC or Canexel (treated wood chip composite material) rather than real timber.

To meet the upmarket feel lodges will offer luxury modern interiors with flat screen televisions, leather sofas and high specification kitchens and bathrooms. Many lodges offer improved insulation properties and come with central heating, very useful if the park offers an extended season.

Lodges are general subject to purchase and license agreements in the same way as static caravans and it is important to check these terms prior to purchase. This agreement should outline all cost such as annual site fees and specify the length of time a lodge can be sited on the park.
